Notes on the Midterm Wipeout in Virginia

By the time the blue wave sweeping through the 2026 Midterm elections was done with Virginia, Republicans lost two Congressional seats (VA-01 and VA 02) to Democrats while incumbents in all the rest of the seats retained theirs.

Democrat incumbent Sen. Mark Warner won the U.S. Senate race against his Republican challenger, retired Army Gen. Burt Mizusawa. See below, broken out by ballot type.

The summary tallies exceed 2022 midterm turnout stats: 1.2 million early (in-person) votes, another 1.9 million voting on election day, and about 330,889 mailed absentee for a total of about 3.6 million votes cast in the Midterm Election.

The yes votes prevailed in all three Constitutional amendments; litigation is still unfolding over the wording of Amendment #1, which enshrines abortion up to the moment of birth and removes parental consent for under-age girls. A hearing on the case, brought by the Founding Freedom Law Center (FFLC), is scheduled for Nov. 13 in Tazewell Circuit Court in Virginia. The lawsuit says argues the “no-restrictions abortion measure ‘profoundly misleads by omission and misrepresentation’ the voters when asking them to vote for it.”

As in 2025 when Republicans lost many assembly seats, mail-in ballots and the early in person voting numbers made all the difference for candidates who went on to win their contests.

For example, in the VA 1, VA 2 and VA 5 races, which were the most contested, surges in mail-in ballots and early in-person tallies pushed Democrat challengers past incumbents Rep. Rob Wittman in VA 1, and Rep. Jen Kiggans in VA 2.

Turnout was way up, and as much of the analysis shows across the U.S. results today, Republican voters came out very strong — and delivered a rebuke.
