Early Voting for Virginia’s 2026 Primary elections wrapped on Saturday with turnout sleepy in spots, robust in others — depending on the federal and statewide races.
Ahead of Primary Day on Tues., Aug. 4th, overall early voting results are below EV tallies from the 2024 Republican and Democrat primaries, held in June of that year.
(The majority-Democrat assembly changed the dates of the primary elections to make room for the rushed redistricting Special Election in April, which the Supreme Court of VA declared unconstitutional on multiple counts.)
2026 Primary Election Early Voting Stats, Tallies & Charts
According to the (unofficial) Daily Absentee List (DAL) of early voting from Virginia’s Dept. of Elections we see:
Democrat Primary: 91,747 ballots cast (mail-in and in-person)
—Breakdown: 45,395 (in person) and 51,752 (mail in)
Republican Primary: 67,457 ballots cast (mail-in and in-person)
—Breakdown: 38,170 (in person) and 29,287 (mail in)
EPEC Team breaks the numbers out slightly differently than VPAP, although we use the same DAL data feed provided by Dept. of Elections.
- Turnout numbers align with key congressional races where Republicans and Democrats are vying for a chance to take on incumbents in hopes of changing the current 6-5 (D-R) delegation and control of Congress in the midterm elections.
- Republicans are also selecting among U.S. Senate candidates to face incumbent Democrat Sen. Mark Warner.

In addition to challenging Republican incumbent Rep. John McGuire in Congressional District (CD) 5, Republican primary candidates are lining up to challenge Democrat incumbent Yevgeny “Eugene” Vindman in CD 7 and Democrat Suhas Subramanyam in CD 10.

In the Democrat primary for CD 1, no less than 7 candidates are vying for the nomination to face Republican incumbent Rob Whitman.
Four Democrat candidates are lining up for the nomination to face CD 2 incumbent Republican Jen Kiggans.
In addition, Democrat incumbent Rep. Don Beyer of CD 8 is facing four challengers in his re-election bid.

- Per Dept. of Elections: By-mail ballots “must be postmarked on or before election day and received by your general registrar’s office by noon on the third day following the election (In the event that that day is a holiday, the deadline is moved to the following business day).”
